Golden Dusk and Velvet Sky
Nataly Mo’s 2026 small-format study is a tour de force of emotional saturation and tactile relief, demonstrating an exceptional command of expressive colour theory and surface architecture. Depicting a coastline engulfed in the dramatic transition to nightfall, Mo constructs a vision of the UK shore where atmosphere and geology collide with startling intensity.

The upper register is dominated by an incandescent, swirling sky of royal purple and deep violet, built with visible, gestural brushwork that conveys atmospheric churning. A narrow, luminous tear of gold and ember light along the horizon provides a striking thermal contrast, illuminating a crisp band of deep cobalt sea. Below this horizon, the painting breaks into a tactile dialogue of medium and mark: broad, muscular sweeps of impasto cream and ivory simulate the churn of coastal foam, while a silhouetted mass of deep umber and plum anchors the left flank. In the lower right, Mo introduces an intricate passage of craquelure—a dry, golden-amber crusting that physically mimics the desiccated, weathered geology of coastal rock and tidal clay.

By pairing the delicate, crackled texture of the earth with heavy, fluid impasto, Mo elevates the canvas beyond simple representation into a sculptural, sensory object. The work bridges the gap between pure abstraction and grounded landscape tradition, offering a potent, highly memorable meditation on the wild, changing energy of the Suffolk coast at dusk.

Nata Mo is an accomplished artist. Her extensive professional background includes studies in Kyiv and Paris. She has exhibited globally since 1995 and has created over 500 paintings, which are held in private collections worldwide. Her remarkable creative output is now fuelled by urgency: she faces the threat of complete vision loss due to a right optic nerve cancer diagnosis. Though doctors saved one eye, the spectre of blindness motivates her to see and achieve as much as possible, as she continues her celebrated artistic career.
