Passage of the North Wind
Nataly Mo’s 2026 panoramic landscape study is a commanding, highly gestural meditation on atmospheric power and physical terrain. Utilising an extended horizontal format, Mo constructs a visual narrative dominated by momentum, where the traditional stillness of the British countryside is replaced by a sense of elemental upheaval.
The composition centres around a dramatic, V-shaped convergence of dark, looming ridge lines that funnel the viewer's gaze toward a rift of pale cerulean sky. Mo’s execution is exceptionally tactile and varied: on the left, a weathered passage of fine craquelure grounds the work in the crustal archaeology of drying mudflats and ancient stone. In the centre, sweeping diagonal dry-brush strokes of burnt sienna, raw ochre, and warm amber surge upward, mimicking the violent press of wind or coastal currents. To the right, heavy indigo and slate-grey washes give way to fluid, uninhibited paint splatters that introduce an element of controlled chance and visceral immediacy.
By balancing the structural weight of deep charcoal masses against the luminous clarity of the sky gap, Mo achieves a refined chiaroscuro effect. The work bridges the romantic legacy of British atmospheric landscape painting with modern abstract expressionism, delivering a piece that is as much about the physical act of painting as it is about the unyielding spirit of the East Anglian shore.
Nata Mo is an accomplished artist. Her extensive professional background includes studies in Kyiv and Paris. She has exhibited globally since 1995 and has created over 500 paintings, which are held in private collections worldwide. Her remarkable creative output is now fuelled by urgency: she faces the threat of complete vision loss due to a right optic nerve cancer diagnosis. Though doctors saved one eye, the spectre of blindness motivates her to see and achieve as much as possible, as she continues her celebrated artistic career.
